GOING THE EXTRA MILE FOR WCPS IN MARCH!

Each month, of the 2,600 Wicomico County Public Schools employees, the school system recognizes three employees for going above and beyond their normal duties and are given an Extra Mile plaque and certificate.

We want to Congratulate our March 2026 Extra Mile Award Recipients who were recognized during the April 14, 2026, Wicomico County Board of Education meeting. Listed below are the recipients and what they do to go above and beyond.

FREDA MORRIS, Behavioral Intervention Teacher - Chipman Elementary

Ms. Morris has played a key role in shaping the Transitional Coach for Early Learning Transitions position and making it work for students and staff. She partners closely with home schools to support PreK through first-grade students with social-emotional and behavioral needs and is especially effective at helping students rebuild relationships and transition back successfully using thoughtful, targeted strategies.

ROBIN ZIMMERMAN, Special Education Teacher - Wicomico High

Ms. Zimmerman consistently steps up wherever help is needed and never hesitates to take on students with complex behavioral or academic needs. Robin works closely with general education teachers to find the best possible solutions for students, responds openly to feedback, and asks thoughtful questions to ensure she’s providing the highest level of support. She regularly assists with testing outside her caseload, fills in for colleagues when needed, and participates in IEP meetings to support continuity for students and families—all while completing her own work thoroughly, accurately, and on time.

JOE HASTINGS, Computer Science Teacher- Mardela Middle/High School

Mr. Hastings exemplifies going the extra mile through his deep commitment to accessibility, equity, and continuous learning in computer science. When teaching blind and partially deaf twins in his Foundations of Computer Science class, Joe embraced the challenge—researching solutions, consulting national accessibility experts, and collaborating with specialists to ensure meaningful access to rigorous instruction. He has created a space where students of all abilities learn confidently together. Through advocacy, humility, and innovation, Joe Hastings has expanded access to computer science and helped make education more inclusive.

If you see any of the March Extra Mile Recipients in your travels, please "Thank" them for going above and beyond last month for Wicomico County Public Schools.
