GOING THE EXTRA MILE FOR WCPS IN APRIL!
(SALISBURY, MD) Each month, Wicomico County Public Schools selects three of its more than 2,800 employees who consistently go above and beyond their everyday responsibilities. These individuals are recognized with an Extra Mile plaque and certificate in appreciation of their outstanding dedication and commitment.
We want to congratulate our April 2026 Extra Mile Award recipients, who were recognized during the May 12, 2026, Wicomico County Board of Education meeting. Listed below are the recipients and what they do to go above and beyond.
CYNTHIA LOFLAND, Custodian II - 101 Long Avenue
Cynthia Lofland is such a joy to have in our school system! What stands out the most is her positive attitude; her work ethic and kind demeanor make a noticeable difference every day. She comes into the Board Meeting Auditorium before every meeting, makes sure all the tables and chairs are wiped down, supplies the auditorium with tissue boxes, and ensures the carpets are vacuumed throughout the building. The building really looks fantastic because of Cynthia's hard work and dedication.
Mrs. Cynthia consistently goes the extra mile, assisting the catering staff with events in the building. She will jump in to help clear and break down tables. We are also impressed with how she is proactive rather than reactive, such as vacuuming the HVAC intake vents regularly, and everyone has noticed a big difference in the general cleanliness of the building since she’s come over to Long Avenue.
MEREDITH MILLER, Mental Health Coordinator
Although Meredith’s role as Mental Health Coordinator focuses mainly on student support systems and services, she clearly understands that the adults who keep our district running every day need care and support too. Seeing that need, Meredith went above and beyond what her job requires, and on her own initiative, brought attention to the staff about mental health and well-being at Central Office.
Meredith took the lead in coordinating a team that designed, promoted, and carried out a full month of activities for Mental Health Awareness Month. Instead of planning a single event, she helped create an entire experience. One that gave staff chances to pause, recharge, connect, and feel genuinely appreciated throughout the month.
Her enthusiasm was contagious. It was clear that employees were excited to participate and be part of what she created. Meredith was thoughtful and intentional in her approach, making sure the activities were inclusive and accessible, with something for everyone.
The time, care, and coordination it took to pull off something of this scale, completely outside her core responsibilities, speaks volumes about Meredith’s character and leadership. Her efforts boosted morale and strengthened connections across departments. Meredith Miller truly exemplifies what it means to go the extra mile.
STEVE ROMANO - Director of Athletics
In his first year in this role, Mr. Romano has already made a remarkable impact across Wicomico County Public Schools. Now, if you didn’t know, this role is complex with a budget to work within, includes every high school in our county, intramural events for middle schools, and is now involving 5th graders in our elementary schools.
Not to mention, Mr. Romano oversees close to 100 athletic teams at our four high schools in the county, often dealing with Inclement weather, which means rescheduling events, along with administrative meetings, event transportation, and referees. He also has fresh ideas, including a quarterly newsletter that is full of excellent information. The newsletter highlights our local students, current sports and health information, and upcoming athletic events.
Additionally, Romano has laid out the foundation for the Student Athletic Leadership Council (SALC), an initiative that reflects his deep commitment to education-based athletics. By prioritizing leadership development, sportsmanship, and a student voice, he is creating meaningful opportunities that will benefit our student-athletes for years to come.
He is a strong leader in this role. He has made his presence known at each of his schools, so there is a face to the name, which is so important, as he consistently attends athletic events, practices, and coaches’ meetings throughout each season.
Mr. Romano truly embodies what it means to go the extra mile. His passion for athletics, coupled with his forward-thinking approach, is making a lasting difference in Wicomico Public Schools.
If you see any of the April Extra Mile Recipients in your travels, please "Thank" them for going above and beyond last month for Wicomico County Public Schools.
